Bee Kindling Takes Second Place at SCORE Muskegon Pitch Competition!
I’ve always believed in the power of sustainable solutions. When I created Bee Kindling, it was no different, but bringing that vision to life requires more than just passion—it takes community support and resources. That’s why I decided to take a big step forward by entering the pitch competition held by SCORE Muskegon, hoping to secure some funding to help the business grow.
The competition was an exciting opportunity to showcase Bee Kindling’s mission of creating eco-friendly fire starters from recycled resources and some unique and elevated shapes made thus far. Bee Kindling is all about starting fires in a way that’s kind to the planet, and with some encouragement to apply, this opportunity would be the perfect chance to share our story with my local community.
The Journey to Pitch

Preparing for the pitch meant putting together a concise, impactful application and then a presentation about Bee Kindling’s vision, our commitment to sustainability, and how I plan to scale in the years to come. If selected, which spoiler Bee Kindling was, the presentation is only 5 minutes long, with 5 minutes of questions from a panel of judges. From our unique fire starter shapes to our dedication to giving back with every purchase, I wanted to make sure the judges saw not only the innovative nature of our product but also the heart behind the brand.
As nerve-wracking as it was, I was excited to stand alongside just a select few other passionate entrepreneurs here in West Michigan, each with their own incredible businesses. There was a strong sense of camaraderie, and seeing the diverse and innovative ventures in our community was inspiring. However, it is a competition, and of course, we want to be at the top!
The Big Moment
Founder and owner Maggie Oudsema presented Bee Kindling’s mission to a panel of judges on October 17, 2024.
When it was my turn to pitch, I focused on highlighting what makes Bee Kindling special. From our use of recycled local materials (you can read more in our About Us section) to our mission of helping people start “a kinder kind of fire,” I wanted to convey the potential impact Bee Kindling has on you, the customer, and the environment. I also included that fire starters do not need to be boring anymore! They can be fun, unique, and elevated shapes that help create memories before any match is lit.
After all the pitches were done, the waiting began, and I must admit, I was both anxious and hopeful. Winning something would mean an opportunity to invest in new product designs and improve our manufacturing process to bring our products to customers who care about eco-friendly living.
Second-place Win!
I’m thrilled to share that Bee Kindling earned second place in the competition for newly opened businesses! This recognition is a huge honor and an exciting milestone for Bee Kindling, which, up until this point, has been self-funded! The award helps with funding and boosts my confidence as I continue to grow and evolve.
The support from SCORE Muskegon and the judges was incredible, and the experience taught me so much about pitching our brand and vision. I received great feedback on my application and presentation, so I can improve the next time I apply for a funding source like this. This is just the beginning for Bee Kindling, and I’m even more motivated to continue making an impact with you—one fire starter at a time.
What’s Next?
With this win, I’m looking forward to using the funds to expand Bee Kindling’s operations (I have some exciting things in store) and bring our unique fire starters to more homes, campgrounds, and outdoor enthusiasts. Watch for new product launches, collaborations, and exciting updates as Bee Kindling grows.
